KIOSK is a web-based magazine featuring the best nonfiction writing from literary journalists at UC Irvine. It is edited and designed by a student editorial board under the guidance of UCI, faculty. At the end of last year, I was asked by Patricia Pierson, the assistant director of the LJ program, to jump on board as the KIOSK’s first-time photo editor. This was very exciting for me because I could take the reigns on the photographic vision for the magazine. Because it is still such in the beginning stages, I had to hone down my over-eagar tendencies to “put the cart in front the horse,” if you will. I was mentally expecting and overcommiting myself to take pictures for each article being written, help design and produce an incredible photo spread…all in one quarter as a full-time student. I began to set my feet on stable ground and set some realistic expectations—one of them being portraits for the editorial board. We have a small group of extremely talented student writers who overlook the pieces that are chosen for the magazine. We meet once a week in preparation for our launch party on December 2.
Here are a few of the portraits that I took last week.
